Soprano "lirico-leggiero" Maya Villanueva uses her voice in a number of musical genres, from Baroque repertoire and Mozart to the 20th century repertoire, including French Song and Spanish American repertoire. For her it is important to share her talents both on stage and through recordings of today's contemporary composers.

In May 2018 she took on the lead role in the French opera Fando et Lis by Benoît Menut, at the Opéra de Saint-Etienne (conductor : Daniel Kawka), a successful creation which won acclaim from both the public and the press. She collaborated with Michaël Levinas in the composition of his last opera, Le Petit Prince, and she is the creator of works by Gabriel Sivak (Tres Instantes Onirícos for voice, cello and piano), Magic Malik and Prabhu Edouard (Odes and Lahera around the Tabla), Benoît Menut (Quantas, Big Prize Sacem 2016), Suzanne Giraud (Le Chant du Marais, a musical tale written and performed by Pascal Quignard for soprano, cello and recitant, with music composed by Suzanne Giraud).


One of her most prestigious projects so far will be the debut, in october 2019, of Les Enfants du Marais by Suzanne Giraud and Pascal Quignard, in collaboration with Radio France's Philharmonic Orchestra and the Maîtrise, in partnership with France Culture.

Her new CD of Benoît Menut's compositions, featuring cellist Emmanuelle Bertrand and members of the Syntonia Piano Quintet will be released in March 2020 (Harmonia Mundi).


Her discography includes the complete songs for voice and piano by Alberto Ginastera  (4 Stars Classica, 4 Keys Opera Magazine, 5 Eights Notes Pizzicato, CD of the week on Concertclassic...); Chansons by Prévert and Kosma (2015, Anima); songs by Claude Debussy with the Syntonia Quintet ( Klarthe Records, 2018), and recently a new CD with the music of the young composer Gabriel Sivak (La Patience, 2019, Klarthe Records).

On stage she has performed roles such as Barbarina, Susana (Mozart, Le Nozze di Figaro), Drusilla (Monteverdi, l'Incoronazione di Poppea), Amour (Gluck, Orfeo and Eurydice) and Elisa (Mozart, Il Re Pastore). She has also performed in Oratorio in many venues, such as Le Quartz de Brest (Coronation Mass by Mozart) and Le Grand Théâtre de Poissy (Requiem by Mozart).

She has performed in recital in: Trondheim (Norway), Lima (Peru), London, Luton (UK), Festival de Royaumont, Paris Salle Gaveau, Salle Cortot, Opéra de Lille, Festival de Saintes, Festival Tempo (Le Croisic), festivals de Chaillol, de Kersaint, Autour du Ventoux...

Born in Paris and of Peruvian origin, Maya comes from a family of artists. A trained pianist and violinist, she joined the Maîtrise de Radio France at the age of ten where she adquired a solid musical and stagecraft training, and sang under the direction of conductors such as Seiji Ozawa, Kent Nagano, James Conlon and Charles Dutoit. She continued to study singing at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris (CNSMDP). She also benefited from having Sophie Hervé, Annick Massis, Jean-Pierre Furlan and Kurt Widmer as mentors. She studied Baroque repertoire with Andreas Scholl, Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, Nicolas de Figueiredo, Martin Gester and French Art Song and the Lied with Patrick Cohen, Maciej Pikulski, Nathalie Dang, François Le Roux, Christian Ivaldi and Jeff Cohen.
